The Frontier Wars - the battles
April 24, 2017
This pole was painted by the Palowa (Tasmanian Aboriginal) man, Tank.
It commemorates the Tasmanian Wars of the 1820s and 30s which were known at the time as the Black Wars. Governor Arthur declared martial law, during which time Indigenous people could be killed without consequences. The war was mostly geurilla style conflicts between the Indigenous people and the settlers, supported by the government. A large scale military operation called the Black Line which aimed to remove Indigenous people from the settled areas was undertaken by the government. Historians debate the correct terminology. Was it war? Was it genocide?
That the culture and way of life of the Indigenous people was destroyed is very clear. As a white Australian I am sorry.
