The Frontier Wars Installation
April 23, 2017
2 years ago we established a Indigenous and Islander war Memorial beside Lindsay Road commemorating people who fought in Australia's overseas wars (using a Centenary of Anzac grant). We are now adding a Frontier Wars section to this War Memorial for Australia's most significant war in which a whole continent changed hands. I am particularly interested in the history of the local area, the places where my ancestors and family members were early settlers or part of the Indigenous community. The installation represents these things. It includes eight poles. The two in the picture are recycled from the Buderim Foundation's B150 Philantoropoles, the other 6 are from timber felled on the property. The pole on the left was painted by local artist Sam Jones and represents the local creation story of Coolum, Ninderry, and Maroochy. The poles are linked by barbed wire to represent a fence. Fences were an important instrument of the dispossession as they stopped access to food and water sources and free movement around the country side.
